PENGARUH KETEBALAN PEREKAT TERHADAP KEKUATAN SAMBUNGAN BAJA KARBON RENDAH DENGAN KOMPOSIT SECARA PEREKATAN DI LINGKUNGAN BASAH
ABSTRACT
Adhesives joint have been widely used in the automotive industry, aircraft
industry and electronic industry. However when adhesives joint are exposed in wet
environment it may affect the strength of the joints. The study aims to determine the steel
composite bonding and failure mode when the thickness of the adhesive was varied. The
joints were made from low carbon steel and composite fiberglass/ polyester bonded
using an epoxy adhesive. The adhesive thickness was variation 0.1 mm, 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm,
0.4 mm, and 0.5 mm. The specimens were immersed in distilled water at 60oC for 15
days, after that the shear test was carried out. Beside the shear strength of steelcomposite
joints water absorption and tensile strength of adhesives and composite
fiberglass/polyster were also studied, where the specimens were immersed in distilled
water at 60oC. The test results were analized using one way and two ways anova. The
result showed that in dry conditions the increase of the adhesive thickness increases the
shear strength of the joint. In wet condition the increase of the adhesive thickness did
not affect the shear strength as the joint failed of the interface and gave low strength
due to water absorption. Overall, in dry condition the failure mode was faailure mode is
interfacial at the interface of steel and adhesive. But there are small cohesive failures of
the composites that remain at the steel surfaces. In wet condition the failure mode is
interfacial total at the interface of steel and adhesive.
