RELIABILITY OF NEW INNOVATION ASPHALT CONCRETE DESIGN PROCEDURE
Asphalt concrete mixture that can resist heavy traffic loads should be considered about mechanical properties of asphalt mixture. Mix design procedure in Indonesia has been based relay on a conventional procedure, i.e. Marshall design method. However, it has been known, Marshall Method refers to empiric approach that does not considered resistance of stress and strain properties of asphalt mixture.
The proposed new innovative procedure is asphalt mixture design using coarse dense graded. This paper also describes a laboratory experiment examining the behaviour of innovative procedure of asphalt concrete design. A range of trial mixes were prepared using gyratory compaction, vibrated and impact compacting methods. Variables studied included bitumen content and mechanical properties.
The experimental work has shown that a new proposed mix design procedures done with high number of reliability levels. It can give superior performance to heavy traffic load pavement (Interstate). Research and laboratory work are to formulate and evaluate mix design criteria and specifications to resist heavy traffic load. Result of research shown both mechanical properties and reliability of mixture specimen fulfils criteria for heavy traffic loads. Optimum bitumen content for proposed new procedure laid between 4% - 4.5%.
