Pengaruh Variasi Komposisi Bahan Komposit Serbuk Kayu Balau dan Serbuk Tempurung Kelapa dengan Penguat Serat Bambu Terhadap Sifat Mekanik dan Fisik Sebagai Bahan Alternatif Kampas Rem
Brake is supporting product for vehicle which is very important to reduce the vehicle speed and provide safety for its users. The use of asbestos friction material has a weakness that can lead to the risk of cancer for workers and for its user, while the semi-metallic friction material when it is used as a motorcycle brake friction lining can cause damage to the drum. Therefore, the friction material of organic materials need to be developed. The purpose of this research was to determine the best composition as well as the physical and mechanical properties of organic brake lining which made of various kinds of wastes such as sawdust turvy, coconut shell powder, and bamboo fibers with phenolic resins as a binder that will be applied to motorcycles.
In this research, brake linings specimens made using three variation of composition ingredients (in weight) there are variation I (34% sawdust turvy, 26% coconut shell powder, 4% bamboo fiber, 36% phenolic resin), variation II (27% sawdust turvy, 27% coconut shell powder, 8% bamboo fiber, 38% phenolic resin), and variation III (20% sawdust turvy, 28% coconut shell powder, 12% bamboo fiber, 40% phenolic resin). Manufacture of brake linings specimens was conducted using 4 Ton compacting the load and then followed by the sintering process at a temperature of 150o Celcius for 180 minutes. Mechanical testing which was conducted is wear test, hardness test and tensile test. Then physical tests are used the micro observation using an optical microscope.
Based on a series of the tests it can be concluded that the best composition and closest to standards (SAE J661) obtained in variation I with the wear value is equal to 9,40 x 10-7 gr mm2.s, hardness value is equal to 74,6359 HBN and tensile strength value is equal to 0,6365 N/mm2. From the physical observation (micro photograph), each variation has a different solids filler and fiber deployment where the higher percentage of filler and the lower percentage of fibers that used, were obtained the better solid specimen and the otherwise too, so that can affect the mechanical properties of the brake lining specimen.
